More often called "dog tags," military ID tags are issued to each member of the forces in order to help identify one's body in the event the solider is seriously injured or killed.

Although all identification tags serve the same function, to identify whomever or whatever is wearing the tag, they do come in a wide variety of both styles and types. More specifically, three of the most common types of identification tags are military ID tags, pet ID tags, and athletic ID tags. The following article should illuminate both the similarities and differences between these three types of ID tags.

Military Tags
More often called "dog tags," military ID tags are issued to each member of the forces in order to help identify one's body in the event the solider is seriously injured or killed. Although this may seem a bit morbid, being able to identify a solider ensures the family of the solider can be correctly contacted if something fatal were to happen. A surprising feature about the dog tag is how easily it snaps in half. This allows a solider who happens across a fallen ally to take half of the tags with him or her, while the other half stays with the unmovable body. If the body is later recovered, the two halves of the dog tags will then be reunited.

Pet Tags
In contrast to the military ID tag, pet ID tags are usually not intended to identify a deceased body. Rather, pet ID tags are to enable lost dogs to be rightfully returned to their owners. Similarly to how a soldier would wear his or her tags around the neck, a pet most often wears its ID tag around the neck, fastened to a collar. Once found by a stranger, the pet's owner can be contracted by whatever contact information is provided on the identification tag.

Athletic Tags
Recently, athletes have begun to wear identification tags or identification bracelets. Runners, cyclists, and triathletes are the most frequent users of this type of identification tag. Athletic ID tags allow athletes who are injured and unable to communicate to be properly helped. Most often on an athletic ID tag contains the name of the individual, home address, and information of an emergency contact. By using an identification tag, athletes are able to have piece of mind in the event of an unfortunate incident like being hit by a car while running.

Identification tags serve many different groups of individuals, but they are all useful in their own way. A solider does not have to worry about his or her family wondering what happen to him or her in battle, a lost dog can be returned, and a stricken athlete can be rushed to a hospital to receive prompt care.
