When you first put the swimming pool in your back yard the only thing that you could think about was spending your days relaxing in the cool waters when the thermometer starts to climb. There is nothing more enjoyable at the end of a long hard day at work than being able to throw on a swimsuit and dive into those cool clean waters. As long as everything keeps humming along and all of the machinery that keeps your pool going stays running, all is well.
Of course when you put the swimming pool in, the economy was humming along and if anything, when something did happen, you could easily afford to pick up the phone and call on your favorite pool repair company. But the times have change and the economy is no longer as strong as it once was. While it may or may not have affected you personally, it does not mean that you can still afford to throw your money away. You have to pay very close attention to how you spend every dime and this includes what you spend to keep you pool up and running.
It is great to be able to simply call in the pool repair company every time the pump or salt chlorinator stops working, but at the same time it can be very expensive. The flagging economy has put many pool repair companies out of business as many people have had to make the difficult choice of draining their pool and leaving it stand empty merely because they can no longer afford to call in the repair company. It seems a shame to have to leave the pool you took such pleasure in sitting empty or turning green for lack of a simple repair.
If you find yourself faced with this choice, before you pull the plug and start draining that blessed oasis for the last time, you might want to consider another alternative. Just because you cannot afford to call in a pool repair company does not have to mean that your pool should stand empty. What if you could do your own repairs? While you might think that performing repairs on the equipment that keeps your pool up and running is far beyond your abilities, you might be surprised to find that despite the outrageous price most pool repair technicians charge, it is not as hard as it seems.
The only thing you really need is for someone to teach you how to do the work. So long as you can use a few basic hand tools, there is nothing so complex about any of the equipment that you cannot learn to do with a little guidance. Just about the only thing that you are likely not going to be able to handle is any of the plumbing that runs underground and to the bottom of your pool. Other than this, everything else is fair game.
The pool company will be more than happy to charge you several hundred dollars to replace a burned out pool pump or salt chlorine generator, which you can learn to replace for the cost of the pump and a couple of hours of your time. They would do the same for a broken backwash valve or to simply clean out your cartridge filter or put new replacement cartridges in it so that your pool water stays as clean as possible throughout the year.
